The Broads

Manila Bulletin, Philippine Star and The Philippine Daily Inquirer.

MANILA BULLETIN

Manila Bulletin’s front page does not have any ads. Except for the paper name bar, there was portion there where MB (Manila Bulletin) was inviting advertisers to put an ad on their paper. No ads but just an invitation to advertise. Smart move there, MB.

CONTENT

Manila Bulletin, considering that it is a government owned paper, the news content was particularly lightly written and tackled. Almost all the news related to the government was a good one and was treated lightly by the writers. All good news, all for the government.

Even the local news were all good news. Hmm. Okay. I’m not saying anything.

The editorial writers for the section were a few politicians such as Sen. Edgardo Angara, Gov. Jun Ynares of Rizal and former president Fidel V. Ramos. If there is a connection there with MB being a gov’t owned newspaper, I don’t know. What do you think? ;)

MB was full of lifestyle sections and articles. There were heavy feature stories such as features about Singapore, Indonesia, New Zealand, Rio de Janero and an advertorial for Globe Super Plan. It was an article about the product, meant to advertise the product of course.

The business page has a one whole page of ad for Manila Hotel.

Mb has a section titled,  Shipping Bulletin: Air, Sea, Land. It was a section for everything that comes down to transportation. MB was the only one offering this from the three broadsheets that I have.

Unsurprisingly, MB, a broadsheet paper, is heavily printed with lots and lots and lots of classified ads.

There was also a Special Supplement section about the University of Santo Tomas.

The entertainment section, as well as other papers, has movies and TV guide for the readers. It also have a comics section that is filled with colors, unlike the comics from tabloids.

A Panorama issue is included in the Manila Bulletin Sunday newspaper.

ADVERTISEMENTS

Manila Bulletin is one of the big-three newspapers in the country. It is but normal to expect lots and lots of advertisers supporting them.

Some include Petron, Cebu Pacific, Mastercard, Montero Sports car, condo units, Globe Tattoo, Zunic and the CEU.

One full ad was also dedicated to the E-trike Design competition sponsored by the government agency of DOE.

The Philippine Star

Is it just coincidence? The Philippine Star having the same front picture as with MB? Well, it isn’t totally the same. But the same place and activity was being shown. So now, what?

Well, it’s Chinese New Year and it’s normal to use that in a story. Anyway, it’s not new anymore, the big three using the same big story as front liners for their papers.

CONTENT

PS (Philippine Star) has a booming headline about the government. And as I read on other stories, it felt good to know that PS is quite a fair paper. Not being bias about news and contains all random stories many people will appreciate.

The treatment for news is also very good. It’s not over-reacting like some papers and other TV news programs that’d do anything even jeopardize news, just to catch the viewers and readers attention.

PS has all sorts of news. But what is noticeable is the metro news that contained crime news. I did not see any crime news on MB.

The feature story of PS was about the Chinese New Year. It was a special edition feature story wherein they featured the celebration as well as other Chinese people, Chinese foods and the like.

If MB has got Panorama, Philippine Star has the issue of the The Philippine Star Week and Sunday Comics for their Sunday edition.

What a competition.

ADVERTISEMENTS

Some of The Philippine Star’s advertises include Globe, Ayala Land, Smart and Sun Plan, Pizza Hut and so on.

Ayala Land has an insert ad hugely printed on a few pages, and can be seen in almost half the whole page.

The Philippine Star also has a Career Guide edition for their classified ads. If you’d ask me, there was nothing different from PS’s classifieds.

Philippine Daily Inquirer (Philippine Sunday Inquirer)

The Philippine Daily Inquirer (PDI) has been my newspaper ever since I was in high school. I don’t know if I will be biased on this but I have been reading PDI ever since and has absorbed its content most of the time.

The front page of the PDI was full-packed news and stories except for a small insert of an ad, Sunkist ad, on a small corner.

The header of the front page is also a picture that is meant to capture the readers’ attentions.

As I read on PDI each time, I knew each story was just appropriate and just; that the news, even the headlines, weren’t biased.

I also enjoyed reading the editorial section of PDI because its editorial writers tackle almost anything, not just the common issue our nation has today.

The lifestyle section has also been a favorite of mine. It contains topics that were interesting. For me, they are.

PDI Sunday edition has an issue of the Inquirer Comics Sunday and Junior Inquirer. PDI also offers the Job Market section where available jobs are posted.

ADVERTISEMENTS

PDI, being one of the most popular newspapers in the country, is not surprisingly full on advertisements. Some advertisers that advertise in the said paper included Globe Tattoo, Chowking, Ayala Land, Fatima Univeristy and Assumption College.

There was also a whole-page ad of the Ayala Land.
